William Noland is an award-winning photographer, sculptor, and documentary filmmaker currently teaching at the Art Department of Duke University. He came to me looking for a portfolio website to showcase his work in each of his media, in addition to essays by and about him and biographical information. The challenge was to create a design that would keep out of the way, not distracting in anyway from the artwork. We decided on an extremely minimal, monochromatic interface that could contain each kind of work without major structural changes.

Despite the website’s aesthetic minimalism, there is plenty going on behind the scenes. Custom client-side scripting allows entire portfolios to be viewed without reloading the page. At the same time, nothing is sacrificed in terms of accessibility or search engine optimization (unlike Flash-based portfolios). A customized video player and slideshow also contribute to the consistent feel of the site.
I worked on the client-side coding, CMS setup, information architecture, interface design, template design, XHTML/CSS.
